Hop Land of Hallertau

In the heart of Bavaria …
The biggest connected hop growing area of the world measures 17,800 hectares. The green gold is of major importance in Bavaria. 641 of the 1,200 German breweries are in Bavaria, many of them in Hallertau.

The hop poles tower up to seven metres above the ground, in-between barley and wheat dance in the wind, criss-crossed by crystal-clear brooks. Easy to notice: Here the basic ingredients for making beer are grown and harvested. Many of the 5,000 German beers include ingredients grown here. This way many people have gotten in contact with our region.

Besides of the Weltenburger Enge nature reservoir, the area features many other unknown treasures, like e.g. the Niedermoor marshland south of Niederleierndorf, Königsau in the wetlands of the Danube, the Nötting cattle pastur or the inland dunes near Siegenburg and Offenstetten. White storks, curlews, globe flowers, sundew or the rare sombre goldenwing dragonfly tell of a healthy ecological system. The area itself is a big recreational area and it is easy to forget the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

The onion domes of the village churches greet from afar and there are some unique churches like the ones in Rohr and Weltenburg. Not only the ornaments tell of the devoutness of the people of the region. Many of the traditional festivities have an ecclesial origin.
